Understanding Your Social Media Audience

Creating a social media presence for your business is a great idea. It is a new way to interact with new and existing customers. It is cost-effective and can have tremendously positive impacts on your business model. Most companies have Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts that they update and monitor. Use these accounts effectively and intuitively and you can help garner new exposure and stronger brand awareness.

When you first embark on creating new Facebook posts or Twitter tweets it dawns on you that this is the voice of your company, not you as the person. This changes everything. You need to have zero gravity thought processes and think of yourself as how you want the customer to hear your company’s voice.

What does this mean? If you are a green company than that needs to come through in the messages you relay to your fan base. You should harp on environmentally conscious practices your company follows or talk about relevant charities or foundations your company supports. Give your company a soul through your posts and tweets. The goal of using social media is not only to interact with your customers in order to have them buy your products, but to have them realize that real people with positive initiatives are the ones behind the scenes making the products great. Aligning yourself with customers’ core values can help you strengthen brand loyalty. For the same reason we repeatedly buy the music, whether good or bad, from our favorite artists, because we love what they stand for and want to support them, people may do the same with your company. Craft your messages to your ideal audience and show that you are just like them and can help them and you will be surpised at the potential impact.

 

Clever and poignant messages can strengthen brand awareness and loyalty

 

As you know, not all companies or brands are alike. Keep this in mind, because some company’s need less social media than others. Over exposing can often be a huge turnoff to potential and current customers. Posting and tweeting nonstop and being overbearing can really kill your “cool” factor. Make poignant meaningful messages that capture your company’s essence and reiterate your “cool” or “wow” factor. Nobody likes someone who constantly pounds their chest over and over. Instead we often like the calm, cool, collected person who speaks when necessary, and everyone always listens. Quality not quantity.

Social media is new, it is fun, it is cool, but most importantly it is loaded with hidden value. When I say hidden value, I truly mean dollars and cents. Use social media to catch peoples’ eye, validate your products and services, gain notoriety through fans (which are actually referrals), and put yourself in the right place to be discovered by people who want and need what your company offers.

Start your social media accounts, develop a persona for your company through team strategy, and then implement it. A great idea for companies, especially ones that offer trial services, is to mandate that the person using your service  “like” your company page on Facebook before being able to enact their trial account. This now gains you a fan on Facebook, blasts it out to this person’s network, and brings them to your Facebook page to learn more about what you have been saying recently. Some companies even offer discounts, albeit small ones, for liking on Facebook or following on Twitter.

Harness the power of social media by leveraging the greatness of your company. People like your company and what it offers, so let them interact with you via social media and  they will be your best salesmen. 

Assess your company and its core values to begin understanding how to use social media effectively. If you do not know the DNA of your own company it will be obvious in your social media campaigns.

Keep in mind where your company came from, where it is now and most importantly, where it is going in the future.
